Located in the north of the island of Tenerife, the municipality of Garachico features two well-differentiated areas: the coastal strip between the sea and the Protected Landscape, that is, the cliffs Acantilados de La Culata, where the Garachico Centre Historical Ensemble (the island’s capital until the 18th century and declared a Site of Cultural Interest) is located. The town is immersed in a landscape dominated by the characteristic banana plantations, along with other population centres. The middle zone runs from the start of the cliffs to the Nature Park Corona Forestal.
Based on subsidiary regulations from the 1990s, this general zoning plan completely covers the population hubs – except for the Garachico Centre itself. It is an axis of the territorial model located next to the recent port, for which structural planning guidelines were established and set to be governed by the Special Protection Plan.
A rather sustainable model has been adopted thanks to the strategic environmental assessment of the plan, where environmental protection schemes account for 62% of the territory. Compared to the current planning, the urban and developable land was reduced by 15% and the amount of land specifically protected for its great agricultural value: it increases from 153 Ha to 395 Ha.
