This five-star resort is located in a privileged location in the exclusive Abama Development, surrounded by the golf course and featuring magnificent views of the island of La Gomera.
One of the requirements was to preserve the essence of a project originally conceived by the architect Melvin Villarroel (1931-2010, author of the hotel Abama), maintaining the “empty architecture” style that is characteristic of his work (a harmonious relationship between the built space, emptiness, and nature). Likewise, the use of complex shapes that draw from vernacular architecture –protruding bodies, porches, planters, lattices, wooden pergolas, etc. topped off with a skyline of leaning towers of heather.
The key to the project was the landscaping and topographical integration of the three-storey buildings on an irregularly shaped plot with a drop of 48 metres, preserving the conception of an exuberant oasis which sits atop cultivated stone terraces that are so characteristic of the Abama’s style. Pedestrian mobility was prioritised, taking prominence over vehicle traffic. The garages of each row were interconnected underground through tunnels.
The initially planned volume was reduced, changing the original block (reserved for the first row) into a new and smaller space with a greater view out over the landscape in order to allow for maximum scenic enjoyment. Diversity in terms of apartment styles was embraced: starting with 10 types of apartments, that number ended up turning into more than 60 types – all featuring from one to five bedrooms to cater to different customer profiles. The most exclusive units are on the ground floor and feature large, private gardens. On the top floor, there are maisonettes and penthouses with large, panoramic terraces.
The complex has a social club (with a restaurant, cafeteria, gym, social hall, and other common areas) plus three infinity pool areas facing the sunset or the golf course, having been awarded various awards, such as the “Spain’s Leading Resort 2020” by the World Travel Awards, among others.
