The municipality of Adeje is an essential part of the island’s main engine: the tourist economy. The current general zoning plan for Adeje dates from 2004. Among other objectives, this review (in the advanced phase) includes the zoning plan’s adaptation to a new legal framework. It coordinates the different island plans and programmes in the development of the Island Zoning Plan to establish a socially and territorially cohesive model.

In terms of the new proposed territorial model, which is subjected to mandatory strategic environmental assessment and aligned with the sustainability criteria, the increase of some 900 Ha (from 56% to 64% of the municipality) of protected land is noteworthy due to its environmental value. Given the heterogeneous development degree and execution of the planning scheme, the plan had to carefully separate the consolidated territory under the plan from that which is in the process of consolidation, and the areas susceptible to growth. It distinguishes areas of marked residential character from those with a clear touristic nature.
